Understanding probability

Probability is the likelihood or chance of something happening. This stumps a lot of people, but it doesn’t have to. If you’re not maths-oriented you might feel you’ll never grasp it, but stick with me here. Try the following two challenges.

Probability challenge 1

You are tossing a coin (a perfectly fair, evenly weighted coin). The coin has two sides, heads and tails, and each side has the same chance of coming up as the other. In other words, when you first toss the coin into the air there is a 50 per cent chance it will land on heads and a 50 per cent chance it will land on tails. You toss the coin five times and it lands on heads every single time. What is the chance it will land on tails on the sixth toss?
